From Jult 1st 2006 all ocean going cargo vessels must provide an immersion suit
for each member ot the crew.

The deadline complying is the first safety survey after that date.
This requirment complies only ocean going ships and the ships sailing cold waters.

  • After 6 hours immersion in the circulating calm water at 0º C (32º F) – 2º C (35.6º F) the body temperature will not fall more than 2º C (35.6º F) below the normal level of the wearer
  • Buoyancy ≥ 150 N
  • To carry approved retro- reflective tape
  • Net weight ≤ 4.9 kg (≤ 10.80 pounds)
  • Donning and discarding ≤ 2 min
  • Each suit individually tested and approved

News from IMO’s
Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Equipment (DE)

The 46 session was held 10–19 March 2003. The highlights related with Immersion Suits are as follows:

Carriage of immersion suits
Amendments to SOLAS Ch.III Regulation 32.3 proposing implementation of a requirement for one immersion suit to be carried for every person onboard all cargo ships. Furthermore, DE 46 has drafted guidelines for periodic testing of immersion suits and anti-exposure suits.

Draft amendments to Reg.III/32.3 (Immersion suits)
Every person on board the ships other than passenger ships shall be provided with an immersion suit. So, thermal protective aids will not be required any more to be given as one of personal lifesaving appliances.
